Japan opens market for Philippine skilled workers

The Japan government will open its labor market for 500,000 foreign workers for agriculture, construction, shipbuilding, nursing and other healthcare services between 2020 to 2025, according to a recruitment and migration expert.

Migration and recruitment expert Emmanuel Geslani said Japan prefers to hire more Filipino workers as there are already 250,000 Filipinos in Japan who has permanent resident status because many have been married to Japanese citizens.

He said many daycare centers are willing to hire Filipino residents of Japan, adding Japan finally changed its strict immigration policy to accept more low-skilled foreign laborers.

By 2025, Japan is considering letting as many as 500,000 relatively low-skilled laborers enter the country to work in five industrial sectors that have been suffering from an acute labor shortage, namely in the construction, agriculture, nursing, hotel and ship-building industries.
