A party-list lawmaker on Thursday accused Grab Philippines of forcing their so-called driver-partners to slave-like working conditions by giving them unfair sharing mechanism and humanly impossible quotas to get incentives.
Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta Party-list Rep. Jericho Nograles said the sad stories related by Grab driver-partners in their day-to-day struggle to make ends meet has revealed how Grab has been manipulating their drivers to work beyond humanly possible work period to rake for profit.
“Grab is incentivizing modern-day slavery. While Grab executives like Brian Cu are splurging on things like joining a P35 million per share golf country club, their driver-partners hardly earn enough to be able to afford three square meals a day and keep up with the amortization cost of their vehicles,” Nograles, a House deputy majority leader, said.
“With no financial and health risk, Grab is making a lot of money while the drivers who are working in slave-like conditions are left without any protection. To me, this is immoral and this is utterly wrong. This has to stop now and put Grab to the place where it really belongs,” Nograles said.
Grab drivers who attended Nograles’ consultation meeting at the House of Representatives last Tuesday revealed that out of their estimated fare collection of P18,000 per week, they end up getting P3930 per week after expenses on amortization, gas, food, internet and other expenses.
