EMB to carry out P3.5-m greening for Santiago City

SANTIAGO CITY, Isabela—The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environment Management Bureau will carry out a greening system for this city to improve its environment.

Cesar Siador, EMB regional director, said a feasibility study is under way for the implementation of the P3.5-million greening system for the city.

He said the greening scheme is focused on restoring the good quality of the city’s inland bodies of water and to improve its air quality.

Siador said they have recently distributed 1,000 bamboo propagules to the city government to initially start the greening program.

He also said the Calao-Delinquente-Diadi River System-Water Quality Management Area with its governing board is currently crafting a strategic plan to improve its water quality.

The deteriorating water quality of the CDDRS which also serves as source of irrigation water for farmers was caused by indiscriminate dumping of various wastes.

The CDDRS stretches along the 13 barangays of Santiago City and nearby towns where several villagers are being blamed for the water pollution.

“The CDDRS-WQMA will be forming a Technical Working Group to prepare the baseline data that will further improve our strategic plan. Various support and assistance from national and local government agencies including peoples’ organizations will be tapped for this long-term plan,” Siador said.
