‘Women, children will be safe’

THE Quezon City Gender and Development Council, along with the Quezon City Police District’s women and children’s protection desk, on Friday vowed to continue to safeguard women’s rights and make sure violence and abuse will not have a space in the city.

Mayor Herbert Bautista tasked GAD to provide logistical support of the information dissemination and capability development seminars on the city’s GAD Code and Magna Carta of Women.

He called on “silent” victims of abuse and discrimination to speak out.

“If you think you are being taken advantage of, especially if you are person with disability, please report to the barangay, barangay officials for an action,” he said.

Residents, who are victims and witnesses of any violence and abuse to women, children or any gender, may immediately call the QCPD or GAD Council at 988-4242 local 8732 or 8739.

Sr. Insp. Djoanna Santos of the police’s women and children’s protection desk cited the impact of the city’s campaigns to the community.

“We can say that before there were a lot of women who are afraid to voice out the abuse or the violence that’s happening to them. But, due to the vigorous campaign of Quezon City Police District from the community police, more people especially young women get informed on their rights against abuse,” she added.

The police reported more women filed cases of violence against women in 2017 with a total of 512 against 2016’s 484 cases.

Meanwhile, city administrator Aldrin Cuña called on parents to teach their children healthy eating habits.

“We encourage the parents to teach their children to stay away from sugary drinks and junk food,” he said, adding “so that we could prevent non-communicable diseases for a healthier Quezon City.”

He cited City Ordinance 2579-2017 or the Anti-Junk food and Sugary Drinks Ordinance of 2017 restricting the sale and distribution of junk food and sugary drinks inside and within 100 meters from the school fence to all public and private schools.
