House deputy belies plot to oust Speaker

CAPIZ Rep. Fredenil Castro, a House deputy speaker, on Sunday dispelled rumors of a planned coup d’etat to oust Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.

In a Super Radyo interview over dzBB, Castro said talks of a coup d’etat have been circulating for the longest time amid lack of proof or move for it.

“You know that it has been going on around. That coup d’etat has been circulating at the House of Representatives. But personally, there is no such movement neither have I heard something really verifiable,” he said.

He described the rumors as “kuwentong barbero.”

He said their ties with Alvarez’s has remained close and intact.

“We have a good relationship [with him],” he added.

Castro of the National Unity Party also vehemently denied hearsay that a party member would attempt to take over.

“That is fearful. I am the party president, and people might think it is me who is trying to replace  Speaker Alvarez. That is far from reality,” he said.

“We at the NUP are true to our members in the coalition, and that we do not entertain negative thoughts against our coalition members,” he added .

Just in case someone would replace Alvarez, former president and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is best for the position, he said.

He, however, said he sees no attempt from Arroyo to grab the speakership from Alvarez.

“Why should former President Arroyo be interested  in a position she does not even need?” he asked.
