At least 20 persons were hurt following a collision involving eight vehicles and two motorcycles along the northbound lane of Airport Road in Parañaque City Friday morning.

The incident, which happened around 8:58 a.m., slowed down vehicle traffic along Roxas Boulevard, Coastal Road and Cavite Expressway for at least three hours, according to the Metro Manila Development Authority.

Those injured—mostly public transport commuters—sustained minor head and body injuries. They were rushed to the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Pasay City.

The vehicles involved were two buses, one of which belongs to Classic Leisure Tour Bus; four public utility jeepneys, a UV Express, a taxicab, and two motorcycles.

MMDA spokesperson Celine Pialago said the incident affected the flow of traffic in the areas of Roxas Boulevard, Airport Road, Sucat Road, Coastal Road and Cavitex.

“The traffic situation on the northbound of Cavitex to Roxas Boulevard and Airport Road is moderate to slow moving. Those injured were assisted by MMDA personnel and village officials,” she said.

Initial investigation showed that the Classic Leisure bus with registration plate TYT 831 lost its breaks and hit the vehicles in front.

Traffic bureau officer Jerry Niño Franco said the bus driver, whom he did not identify, is now in their custody and will be placed under investigation.

Just recently, the MMDA conducted a forum on road safety in a bid to stop the increasing numbers of road accident in the metropolis.

The agency urged motorists to observe discipline and courtesy while driving to prevent road accidents.

Based on the MMDA's latest Road Crash Statistics Report, the agency recorded 52,872 road accidents in the National Capital Region during the first half of 2017.

Of this number listed from January to June 214 were described as fatal; 7,670 non-fatal and 44,988 resulted in damage to properties.
