Consumer group bucks TRAIN Law

Pro-consumer advocacy group Laban Konsyumer Inc. sought Monday a temporary restraining order against the implementation of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Law (TRAIN), noting that the tax hike on basic commodities are not pro-consumer at all.

The group in a petition before the Supreme Court said the TRAIN law should be nullified because of its negative effect on millions of Filipino consumers, especially those from low-income and poor families.

Pro-consumer group president Victorio Dimagiba opposed the unwarranted increases in excise taxes on coal, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas and kerosene which form part of basic commodities, like coal for electricity, diesel for transportation, LPG for food and transportation, and other products and services.

The group claimed the current tax reform was a violation of the Philippine Constitution, calls for an equitable and progressive taxation.
