2 new films battle it out in cinemas today

The local film industry seems to be in an upswing mode this year. Just after the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) wherein eight films thrashed each other at the box office with one emerging as the box-office champion (the MMFF organizing committee has yet to declare it), two new films will try to outrace each other at the tills beginning today.

First and more promising of the two is Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes with drama queen Judy Ann Santos and dramedy princess Angelica Panganiban.

It has an interesting premise: two women married ideal husband-material guys who turn out to be interested in something else.

“First project namin ni Angelica together after such a long time. Of course, it’s a comedy film. happy lang siya. Walang connection sa kapaligiran o sa kumonidad. Tungkol lang sa amin. Kaming dalawa lang,” she said at the press con for the film last week.

They are portraying two very different women that will find themselves stuck with the same problem.

“Isa akong successful dermatologist [dito]. Eventually nagkakilala kami ni Angelica dahil ‘yung mga husbands namin nangaliwa. Dun kami nagkakilala, dun na nagsimula ‘yung ganap. Strong personality [‘yung character ko] at career-driven na tao,” said Judy Ann.

Meanwhile, Angelica’s character plays on the sweet side. “Ako ‘yung opposite. Housewife naman, mas under ako sa kanya. Ako ‘yung pa-sweet, mas may arte ako,” she said.

So, what’s the problem, really?

Apparently, the two women can't accept the fact that their husbands have gone on a detour and seems to have put aside their duties to their wives. And they want to find out why?

Things get complicated when the women find out that their husbands are involved with each other.

Director Jun Robles Lana said that the film has been inspired by true-to-life stories of people who have undergone the same dilemma. “It happens in reality, we just don’t know much about these people and how they react to that kind of situation.”

The actors playing the husbands of Santos and Panganiban are Joross Gamboa (straight from the success of Deadma Walking in which he also played a male gay character) and JC de Vera.

Another interesting fare is the film from Regal Films titled Mama’s Girl by Connie Macatuno from a story and screenplay by Gina Marissa Tagasa.

Sylvia Sanchez (left) and Sofia Andres play mother and daughter in the family drama, "Mama's Girl'

Sylvia Sanchez stars as the mother to a character played by Sofia Andres. Also in the cast are Diego Loyzaga, Alyana Asistio, Karen Reyes, Heaven Peralejo with Jameson Blake and Arlene Muhlach.

Sanchez plays a single mother who brings up difficult daughter Sofia. The mother and daughter pair encounter struggles and conflicts within their relationship and it will be interesting how the two lead stars will patch all their problems up with the help of friends in the cast.

“We want to start the year right by giving our audience something that will inspire them more to embrace change, make more time for people who matter the most and live life to the fullest,” Roselle Monteverde, daughter of Regal matriarch Lily Y. Monteverde, said.

So, who do we think will rake in more moolah at the box office? From the looks of it, expect a neck-and-neck race.

Good luck to Regal and Star Cinema. The cinemas are yours for the next 10 days.

Pambansang Bae Alden Richards turns a year older

***

Alden Richards turned a year older on Jan. 2 and to celebrate his birthday he gathered his loyal

supporters and treated them to a fun day at Enchanted Kingdom on Jan. 6.

It was actually Alden’s idea to spend a special day with his fans. He came up with the concept in November 2017 and he was so hands-on with everything that he even attended all the pre-production meetings.

The fans all had a great time. Apart from enjoying the rides in the theme park the whole day wearing personalized blue shirts with “One Fun Day with the Bae” printed on them, they also got up close and personal with the Pambansang Bae, taking selfies with him and basically bonding with him.

In the evening, Alden’s fellow GMA Artist Center stars held a concert. Bea Binene, Kristoffer Martin, Rodjun Cruz, and boybands T.O.P. (Top One Project) and One Up all performed song numbers and had nothing but good words for the birthday boy.

Maxene Magalona is all smiles during a bridal shower hosted by Tiffany & Co.

“Si Alden, kahit sobrang busy niyan, isang tawag lang, andiyan ‘yan,” shared Kristoffer.

Rodjun added, “Kapag hindi siya sumasagot, isa lang ang ibig sabihin nun – may trabaho siya. At pagkatapos na pagkatapos niya dun, umasa ka na siya mismo ang tatawag sa’yo.”

Bea also reminded the audience just how family-oriented Alden has always been by sharing that time when the actor was about to buy a car. She thought he would choose a good-looking two-door car, but he instead chose a four-door. “Sabi niya, mas magagamit daw ng pamilya niya kung four-door car ang bibilhin niya,” she said.

Alden Richards surely started the year right – by showing his appreciation for his loyal fans, who are sure in for a treat this 2018 considering all the exciting projects of the Pambansang Bae.
