The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) wants to extend the period of martial rule in Mindanao.
AFP Spokesperson Major General Restituto Padilla stated the military's position during a news briefing in Malacañang.
Padilla said the AFP is preparing a full report on the matter.
He is not saying how long Mindanao should remain under martial law.
He noted a decision is still being made and he is not privy to the details.
Padilla explained martial law must be extended because security threats posed by the remnants of Maute terrorists still persist.
He said Maute members and sympathizers who had survived and escaped the military operations in Marawi City are now engaged in recruitment of new members.
Padilla said the terrorists could still be plotting to stage future attacks.
Students and relatives of Maute members killed in Marawi are allegedly the targets in the recruitment process.
Martial law in Mindanao will expire on December 31, 2017.
President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law last May 23 after Maute members invaded Marawi City.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) had recommended an extension of martial law in the south for one more year.
