NCAA Juniors basketball: Red Robins twit EAC Brigadiers, 82-68

The defending champion Malayan High School of Science Red Robins wasted no time in smothering the Emilio Aguinaldo College Brigadiers, 82-68, on Thursday evening at the Arena in San Juan.

Two of their starters, big man Warren Bonifacio and guard Joaqui Garcia, came up with big plays that contributed to the Red Robins’ 10th win in 12 matches.

The win put the Red Robins in the solo lead, and ahead of the La Salle Greenhills Greenies in the 93rd National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Junior Basketball tournament.

The two combined for 13 points as they created mismatches underneath.

Their efforts helped the Red Robins to post a 25-13 lead at the end of the first period.

“May mismatch sa big man. Kaya hinanap ko iyung mga bigs namin para magkakumpiyansa sila,” said the 18-year old Garcia.

Maui Cruz unloaded a game-high 21 points for the Brigadiers.

Cruz had eight points in the second period as the Brigadiers tried to catch up.

But, as he got no significant scoring support from his teammates, the Brigadiers remained behind by 13 at halftime, 30-43.

Red Robins coach Randy Alcantara said they took no chances against Brigadiers.

“Sabi ko sa mga bata, dapat ready kami. Wala kasing mahinang team,” said Alcantara.
