Caloocan City Mayor Oscar Malapitan on Tuesday said the city government plans to procure body cameras that will serve as eyewitness to any untoward incidents or abuses that may be committed by local policemen during an operation.
“If they [police operatives] are wearing body camera, the device will be able to record the operation and will be easy to check if there are irregularities like torturing, or it will also be captured if the suspect fought back on the arresting officers,” Malapitan said in Filipino.
The plan came after mounds of criticisms were received by Caloocan cops over the killings of Kian Loyd delos Santos and Carl Angelo Arnaiz that involved local police.
“The purchase of body cameras will be a great help to our local policemen. The city government also wants to keep its record as one of the peaceful cities in Metro Manila in the past two years,” Malapitan said.
On August 22, Caloocan’s police were also named among the Best Police Stations in the metropolis.
Malapitan, since taking office in 2013, has equipped the police with additional mobile patrol cars, motorcycles, bicycles, computers, and other equipment needed for their operation.
Several police community precincts were also built to continually serve city constituents and those seeking police assistance.
