Cayamora Maute, the father of the Maute brothers who led the attack on Marawi City, died on Sunday, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology said.
Maute was rushed from the special intensive care unit at Camp Bagong Diwa at around 3 p.m. to Taguig-Pateros District Hospital, where he later died, according to BJMP spokesperson Senior Inspector Xavier Solda.
Cayamora suffered from diabetes, hypertension and hepatitis, Solda said.
Cayamora’s relatives received his body and said they would take it to Quiapo.
He was arrested last June 6 at a checkpoint in Davao City.
His wife Ominta Romato Maute, who also goes by the alias Farhana, is also detained in Camp Bagong Diwa.
The Maute group backed by the ‘IS emir’ Isnilon Hapilon laid siege to Marawi City on May 23, prompting President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law over the entire Mindanao on the same day.
