Fuda Cancer Hospital in Guangzhou, China has been treating cancer patients from all over the world since its establishment in early 2000. It has two branches located in Tianhe District and Haizhu District. Both are well-equipped treatment centers known for their minimally invasive therapies, innovative treatments and conventional methods of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery.
Fuda Cancer Hospital’s reputation in providing excellent medical service extends to many countries around the world, including all Southeast Asian countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Denmark, Netherlands, and Russia. Fuda Cancer Hospital's mission is to provide its patients with innovative cancer therapies, and to let the whole world know that Fuda, being one of the best cancer care centers in the world, has no borders.
To date, Fuda Cancer Hospital has treated thousands of patients from 68 foreign countries around the world. The center is known to perform the most number of cryosurgical ablations annually around the world.
In the Philippines, Fuda recently opened its new consultation office at Centuria Medical Makati, the country’s largest outpatient medical facility, in Kalayaan Avenue, Makati City. The office serves as a screening center for patients seeking for cancer treatments at FUDA Cancer Hospital in China. The office also assists the patients and the patient’s family in flight arrangements, visa issues, airport pickups, room accommodation bookings, and banking matters.
“What we do is we first asses the overall situation of the patient before we advise them to travel to Fuda Cancer Hospital in China. We lay down the pros and cons including physical, mental, psychological, physiological, and financial aspects. We are transparent to our patients because we want them to be able to weigh in the situation before they decide. We basically make the entire process easier and hassle-free for them,” says Dr. Mu Feng, Vice President at Fuda Cancer Hospital in Guangzhou, China. Dr. Mu is a Thoracic Surgery Expert and a Minimally Invasive Oncologist. He has been practicing for over 30 years.
Innovative 3C+P treatments
The hospital has been focusing on early diagnosis and treatment of various cancers in the organs of pancreas, liver, lung, breast, uterus, stomach, esophagus, tongue, prostate, skin and larynx, as well as nasopharyngeal cancer, colorectal cancer and lymphoma. However, Fuda is also known to be one of the hospitals that specializes in treating advanced-stage cancers.
While Fuda performs conventional methods of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery it is also known for the innovative cancer treatment approach dubbed as the 3c +P: Cryosurgical Ablation (CSA), Cancer Microvessel Intervention (CMI), Combined Immunotherapy for Cancer (CIC), and Personalized Therapy
“For early stage cancer, FUDA’s goals are first, to cure the cancer and second, to improve the life quality of the patient with an extended life span,” Dr. Mu shares.
The treatments they offer for early-stage cancer includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and mini-invasive ablation. Considered as advanced cancers are those with unresectable tumors, cancers that are unresponsive to chemo and radiotherapy and recurring cancers. For this, the doctors follow a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary and personalized treatment.
“Surgical removal of tumors does not mean that one is cured of cancer because cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. That is why cancer can relapse even though original tumors had been removed. Cancer treatment will work better if doctors work out a treatment plan focusing on the tumor's heterogeneity or the tumor’s specific biological features,” he said.
In Cryosurgical Ablation (CSA), cryo-probes are inserted into tumors using imaging guided techniques (through Ultrasound, CT or MRI). Temperature is then decreased in the targeted area from 160℃ or lower. Afterwards, the temperature is raised between 20 to 40℃. This process is repeated two or three times, resulting in complete ablation of the tumor.
CSA is applicable to both small and large tumors and can be used for ablation of single or multiple tumors. Cryosurgical ablation will not cause damage to large blood vessels and trachea, so it can be used to treat tumors near those areas. It is a painless operation, and it helps reduce pain caused by cancer. After cancerous cells are destroyed by CSA, dead cancerous cells will release antigens which will stimulate the immune system to eradicate any remaining cancerous cells and reduce re-occurrence of cancer.
In Cancer Microsphere Intervention (CMI), one or several types of chemotherapy drugs are embedded to nano particles or sealed in them using a special technology. With an image-guided micro-catheter, these nano particles containing a minimal dose of chemical drugs are inserted into tiny capillary vessels supplying blood to the tumor. The chemotherapy drugs pass through the wall of the capillary vessels into the tumor. As more chemotherapy drugs are released into the tumor, cancerous cells are destroyed. Nano particles cannot pass through the compact walls of normal capillaries. Hence, chemotherapy drugs embedded or sealed inside nano particles will not cause damage to other parts of the body. Furthermore, the overall side effects to the body are reduced to a minimum.
CMI application allows for a high concentration of chemotherapy drugs within the tumor itself while very little amount of drugs are deposited to other parts of the body. With this, a solid tumor is quickly destroyed, reducing its size, and resulting in the disappearance of the stains of capillary blood vessels. Patients can already return home 3-4 hours after treatment, with no hospitalization required. CMI can be repeated without affecting the patient's quality of life.
The Combined Immunotherapy for Cancer (CIC) is meant to raise and improve the systemic immunological function of cancer patients to fight against cancer. CIC is the combination of several immune techniques to increase/stimulate systemic immune function. CIC treatments have broad-spectrum anti-tumor effects yet with very little side effects. It is also an effective measure for the prevention of cancer recurrence.
