Senate investigates issues against Uber & Grab

The Senate Committee on Public Services is investigating on Thursday the status of the franchise applications and operations of Uber and Grab.

Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Member and Spokesperson Aileen Lizada said during the hearing that the so-called Transport Network Companies (TNCs) have not stopped accepting new applications for accreditations of drivers despite the board's order.

Taxi operators, meanwhile, complained that since the app-based transport options became available in Metro Manila, the income of regular taxi drivers have supposedly decreased from the average of P 1,500 a day to P 500.

Committee Chairman Grace Poe earlier said Uber and Grab should not suffer amid the LTFRB's crackdown.

The senator noted the app-based ride-hailing firms have given services that taxi operators have been remiss in providing for the past decade.

She enumerated these services commuters now get from Uber and Grab – point-to-point pick-up and delivery, standardized fare and safe and comfortable rides.
