The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is advising people in Metro Manila to expect an earthquake drill at 4 pm today.

This will aggravate traffic congestion along EDSA, Commonwealth Avenue and C-5 Road.

Emergency drills will be conducted in areas of Pasig City, Pasay City, Quezon City and Manila.

There will be activities in Intramuros, Ortigas, Villamor Airbase and Quezon City Hall.

For 45 seconds, power supply will be cut, communication signals will be lost and Metro Rail Transit-3 (MRT-3) rides will stop.

The shake drill will also see rescue operations during emergency scenarios that are done when buildings and bridges collapse.

MMDA Chairman Danny Lim will press a ceremonial button to mark the start of the event on Friday afternoon.

MMDA Spokesperson Celine Pialago says, they want the earthquake drill to be realistic.

Therefore, there will be no pre-positioned emergency personnel in areas where calamities will supposedly happen.

Authorities want to see the length of time rescuers and firefighters will be able to reach the victims should an actual disastrous tremor occur.

The MMDA will also conduct quake-related activities like rescue and recovery efforts, as well as an assessment of today's shake drill, in the next three days.
