Military finalizes request for martial law extension

The Philippine Army (PA) is preparing its recommendation seeking the extension of martial law in Mindanao.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Spokesperson Restituto Padilla says, the paper will be submitted to AFP Chief of Staff Eduardo Año and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.

The proposal will then be forwarded to the Commander in Chief, President Rodrigo Duterte.

Padilla says, the military would like to lengthen the effectivity of martial law for a few more days.

The basis for the recommendation answers these questions:

Has the AFP quelled the rebellion in Marawi City?

Has the military destroyed the capability of the Maute group to stage another attack in another place?

Is the Maute group already crushed?

Padilla earlier doubted if government troops had completely accomplished these objectives.

For its part, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has drafted a position paper endorsing the extension of martial law.

PNP Chief Ronald Dela Rosa says, the paper focuses on security issues in the areas of conflict.

Last Tuesday, President Rodrigo Duterte said, AFP needs 10 to 15 days more to finish off the Maute terrorists.

He noted this period goes beyond the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 24 (Monday).

The 60-day martial law in Mindanao on declared by Duterte last May 23 will expire on July 22 or two days before SONA.
