‘Total care’ for indigents in Mimaropa

All indigent patients under the Medical Assistance Program of the Department of Health in Mimaropa region will be given the “total care package,” Regional Director Eduardo C. Janairo said Wednesday.

“All beneficiaries of the MAP will be provided full treatment package, meaning they will not only be assisted during the process but they will also be monitored and complemented even after their treatment to ensure their recovery,” assured Janairo during the First Regional Medical Assistance Program Workshop.

“Let us not be contented by just helping our patients,” he added, citing the need to establish an appropriate aftercare program to monitor indigent outpatients and find out what happens to them after they have been discharged.

Janairo said the responsibility of health workers doesn’t end after giving a poor patient the assistance the person needed.

“We have also a responsibility to provide patient education on treatment options, and help coordinate services needed after their discharge from the health facility,” he said.

Under the MAP, certified indigent patients seeking medical assistance and inpatient services in authorized government health facilities are entitled to services prescribed by the attending physician of the government facility.

In case of non-availability of drugs and medicines, tests and other procedures, Janario said the concerned health facility may refer the needed services to a private health facility provided it is accredited by the DOH. Outside services will be charged against the DOH hospital.

Indigent patients need not worry as they will not be spending a single centavo at the private facility, he added. “Medical assistance for them is free,” Janario said.
