Sandiganbayan finds Sabio guilty of graft

Former Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) Chairman Camilo Sabio has been pronounced guilty of graft charges by the Sandiganbayan.

The anti-graft court declared that the 81-year old former head of the PCGG and some PCGG officials entered into anomalous lease contracts worth millions of pesos in 2007 and 2009.

The verdict carries a penalty of 12 to 20 years of imprisonment.

The decision is in connection with the two graft cases filed by the Ombudsman in 2011.

The Ombudsman stated that in 2007, Sabio and 4 other PCGG officials leased three units of Hyundai Starex, one Toyota Altis and one Toyota Innova.

The deal worth P 5.93 million was paid by PCGG without public bidding.

In 2009, the PCGG again entered into another lease agreement worth P 6.73 million to be able to use four Toyota Innova, one Toyota Fortuner and one Nissan Frontier, without public bidding.
