Experiential series marks International Yoga Day

June 21 is International Yoga Day.

The United Nations made this declaration in December 2014, adopting a measure proposed by then Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who endorsed yoga as a method to discover “oneness with oneself, with the world and with nature.”

In a statement following the signing of the resolution, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pointed out the holistic benefits of the practice: “Yoga can contribute to resilience against non-communicable diseases. Yoga can bring communities together in an inclusive manner that generates respect. Yoga can even help people in emergency situations to find relief from stress.”

Some of the most famous practitioners agree that yoga transcends   physical exercise. One of them, the late B. K. S. Iyengar, famously said, “Yoga cultivates… a balanced attitude in day-to-day life.”

The Brahma Kumaris, a UN Peace Messenger that advocates Raja Yoga meditation, commemorates International Yoga Day with a series of experiential programs across the country. The common theme of the free public events is,  “Serving the world with minds that are in touch with inner treasures of peace and with The One Source.”

The first twin events were held last Sunday, June 18, at the Peace Villa in Tagum City; and at Inner Space in Ermita, Manila.

On Wednesday, June 21, the program goes to Davao Medical Foundation School, 5-7 p.m. (call 082 285-8899); Thursday, June 22, Naga City, 5:30-7 p.m. (054 881-1939); and Makati, 6:30-8:30 p.m. (0917 834-0118); Saturday, June 24, Davao People’s Park, 3-6 p.m. (082 285-8899); Baguio, 4-6 p.m. (074 445-5935); and Quezon City, 4-6 p.m. (02 414-9421); Sunday, June 25, Legazpi City, 5:30-7:30 p.m. (052 480-1458).
