Ateneo, La Salle standouts headline ‘Battle of the Rivals’

TWO fierce rivals in Philippine sports are joining forces for the benefit of the Filipino youth.

Former and current players of the De La Salle Lady Spikers and the Ateneo Lady Eagles led by Mika Reyes, Alyssa Valdez, Kim Fajardo, and Jia Morado are facing-off in the “Battle of the Rivals,” a charity volleyball game set on July 16 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Sponsored by Rebisco, the event aims to raise funds for the scholarship programs of the Ateneo De Manila University Foundation, the De La Salle University Foundation, and the Rebisco Foundation, Inc.

Among the decorated DLSU alumnae that will fight alongside Mika and Kim are former UAAP Most Valuable Players Aby Maraño and Ara Galang, former Finals MVPs Cha Cruz and Michele Gumabao, and superstars Melissa Gohing and Cyd Demecillo. Alyssa and Jia, meanwhile, will get a boost from key players from Ateneo’s twin championships like Ella De Jesus, Dennise Lazaro, and Amy Ahomiro, current UAAP standouts Maddie Madayag and Jho Maraguinot, and Fab 5 member Fille Cayetano.

The special match, announced in a presscon at Buffalo Wild Wings at Capitol Commons in Pasig City, will have the usual Best of Five sets format.

The Ateneo Lady Eagles and the De La Salle Lady Spikers have been meeting in the UAAP women’s volleyball finals in the past six seasons, strengthening further the rivalry between the two prestigious universities.

Although fierce competitors in the volleyball court, both schools and teams are united in helping young Filipinos ensure a bright future through education. Volleyball fans can show their support by watching this showdown featuring some of the country’s most popular and most talented athletes.
