The Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights will not make any move to speed up the passage of a counterpart bill that will revive the death penalty.
Justice Committee Chairman Richard Gordon says, senators will thoroughly study bills that seek the reimposition of the capital punishment.
Gordon’s statement comes, following the House of Representatives’ approval of the death penalty bill for drug cases on Tuesday afternoon, eight months after it was filed.
The senator says, the value of human life will be the center of the discussion.
He also notes, the enactment of a law on death penalty may violate some treaties.
Gordon adds, the legislative calender is also a consideration.
Sessions in the Senate and Congress are set to adjourn on March 15 or on Wednesday next week.
Sessions will resume in May.
Gordon also says, should his committee end up approving a death penalty bill, he will not be the one who will defend the measure in the plenary.
