“We’re still on a high after closing the year with A Christmas Carol. The highly infectious songs are still playing in our heads but we feel it’s time to start preparing for our next production,” says Executive Producer and Globe Retail Transformation and Stores Management Advisor Joe Caliro. “We want to continue our musical streak with the Disney film turned Broadway classic Newsies.”

Newsies is loosely based on the newsboys strike in 1899, where a group of boys initiated a strike hoping to improve how child laborers were compensated. The true story was developed into a film by Disney and directed by Kenny Ortega in 1992. It went on to become a cult classic when it was released on home video.

In 2011, the film was adapted into a Broadway musical, with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, book by Harvey Fierstein and starring Jeremy Jordan, the Hollywood actor playing leading roles in hit TV shows Smash and Supergirl. Originally produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions, Newsies later won Best Choreography and Best Original Score.

Globe Live and 9Works Theatrical are looking for actors with star quality who can either sing, act, or dance held an online audition on Feb. 15 until the 25th for mostly males aged 15 years old and above.

The audition callbacks will be on March 5. Submission of entries is extended until today.

“We’ve worked with amazing actors in our runs of American Idiot and A Christmas Carol. We’re looking forward to working with more of them for Newsies,” ends Caliro.

Disney’s Newsies will be staged starting in July at the Globe Iconic Store in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
