Typhoon ‘Lawin’ gains strength as it heads to Northern Luzon

Typhoon ‘Lawin’ slightly accelerates as it moves in west northwest direction.

PAGASA reports, as of 11 am Tuesday, the typhoon is at 950 kilometers east of Daet, Camarines Norte.

It packs maximum sustained winds of up to 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 230 kph.

‘Lawin’ is moving west northwest at 25 kph.

The weather bureau warns, the typhoon may bring storm surge and Signal Number 4 is possible on Wednesday evening.  

Moderate to heavy rains will pour in areas within the typhoon’s 650 km diameter.

‘Lawin’ is expected to make landfall in Cagayan area early Thursday morning and will cross Apayao and Ilocos Norte.

It may leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday morning.

Signal number 1 is currently up over Cagayan including Calayan group of islands, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Northern Aurora, Polillo Islands and Catanduanes.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) is preparing food supplies for residents who might to be affected by the typhoon.

NDRRMC notes, ‘Lawin’ is stronger than typhoon ‘Karen’ and may develop into a super typhoon.
