K-12 subject honors Bulacan war hero

The life and heroism of former Bulacan governor Gen. Isidoro Torres will be kept alive through its inclusion in the new K-12 curriculum.

The plan is being discussed in the Pambansang Kumperensiya sa Bulacan 2016 with the theme, “Isidoro Dayao Torres at 150: Ang Kabayanihan sa Panahon ng Rebolusyong 1896” that will feature the life of the hero from September 13-15 at the Hiyas ng Bulacan Convention Center in Malolos City.

In celebration of Torres’ 150th birthday, the conference, which is a joint project of the Provincial History, Arts and Culture Office (Phacto) and the Samahang Pangkasaysayan ng Bulacan (Sampaka) will extol the heroism of Gen. Torres during the war and learn his views on life amidst crisis.

“We want to include the life and heroism of Torres in the teaching of local history in the K-12 curriculum,” Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado said. “Our students will get to know another hero like Marcelo H. del Pilar.”

A total of 100 elementary teachers and members of Sampaka are joining the event.

Moreover, some of the speeches in the three-day conference will dwell on the meaning and importance of heroism, who Torres is from the viewpoint of his great grandchildren, the reading materials in his time; his journey to Macabebe, Pampanga and the battle in Paombong during the 1897 revolution among others.

“Some people think talking about history is boring but actually it can also be fun,” Dr. Eliseo dela Cruz, PHACTO head, said.

Modules for the K-12 will also be discussed.

There will also be film viewings, a side trip at the Barasoain Shrine and a walking tour at the Barasoain Museum and SAMPAKA exhibit.
