Sinulid: The Threads of Design

Mall rats recently had a glimpse of the future of fashion when the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Fashion Design and Merchandising Program’s graduating students launched Sinulid, an exhibit and fashion show held at SM Aura Premier’s Atrium and Samsung Hall, respectively.

Young fresh fashion talents were showcased as this year’s batch marked a milestone covering two tracks: merchandising or styling and design. This enabled the students to not only focus on design but also to dabble on the business aspect.

During the event, the school’s Merchandising and Styling group transformed the SM Aura Atrium into an array of pop-up stores. Each showcase has its own brand image and aesthetic.  The students relied on various concepts and translated them into merchandising and styling showcases. They were inspired by countries, art, dance, movies, eras and even city lights and interiors.

Meanwhile, the Design group featured their design talents through a runway show at Samsung Hall. Forty graduating students presented their collections, which ranged from street wear to avant-garde, daywear to eveningwear and even menswear to bridal wear. These students were able to demonstrate their creativity and translate them into actual designs. They utilized various fabrics and patterns with some even using local fabrics like jusi and abaca.

The exhibit and fashion show served purpose to Lulu Tan-Gan, Fashion Design and Merchandising chairperson’s message to the students: “Experience and exposure play a very significant part of your fashion education”.
