La Salle, CEU eye 6th titles in a row

HOME and away games in basketball and matches in volleyball will kick of the start of the 47th Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association season this weekend.

Defending champions Centro Escolar University and La Salle Zobel will seek their sixth straight crowns when the senior and midget divisions in the basketball games fire off at 12 noon on Saturday at the Makati Coliseum.

The volleyball matches, with Rizal Technological University seeking another crown in the senior action, gets going Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Volleyball star Alyssa Valdez and women’s 3×3 standout Stephanie Rose Teotica  will grace the opening ceremonies and will be the guest speakers during the volleyball rites which will start at 10 a.m.

“With four days to go, the WNCAA will celebrate its 47 years of existence. Just like in the previous season, this year will be as exciting as before,” said executive director Vivian Manila.

Manila talked about the season with 78th WNCAA host and current league president Fr. Vincent Rayco of St. Jude Catholic School during a press launch at the SJCC campus.

She said all varsity teams will be in competition this season and have leveled up in their preparations.

Participants from RTU, Miriam College and St. Paul College of Pasig are expected to make the competition exciting after winning the overall crowns in the senior, junior and midget action last year.

In Saturday’s opening, host St. Jude clashes with St. Stephen at 12 noon, while CEU takes on Philippine Women’s University at 1:30, and University of Asia and Pacific battles it out with Miriam College at 3 p.m.

The season carries the theme “Women on Fire, A Legacy of Passion,” and will also have competitions in futsal in the first semester, swimming, cheer-dancing, badminton, taekwondo, softball, table tennis and tennis.
