Days of protocol plate ‘8’ numbered

A LAWMAKER on Friday urged Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez to stop the use of the lawmakers’ number 8 protocol license plate, which is sometimes abused by some officials to circumvent traffic rules.

Navotas City Rep. Tobias Tiangco renewed his appeal to the House leadership after Alvarez issued a memo ordering his colleagues to return the protocol plates issued during the 16th Congress and

in previous Congresses, and in light of “reports that certain vehicles with Protocol Plate Number 8 have been spotted in indecent places or figured in crime-related activities.”

Tiangco said Alvarez’s memo should also cover today’s 17th Congress. His House Bill 413 would make the issuance and use of the number 8 license plate illegal.

That bill would impose a fine of P25,000 for using the number 8 or imprisonment of one day to six months.

“We do not need the protocol plate to effectively serve our people,” Tiangco said as he challenged Alvarez’s leadership to pass his bill.
