Cement sales increase 12%

Cement sales increased 12.8 percent in the first quarter to 6.43 million metric tons from 5.7 million MT a year ago, on the back of strong construction.

The Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines said in a report the good weather in the first quarter also contributed to the rise in cement consumption during the period.

CeMAP president Ernesto Ordoñez said the continuation of the public-private partnership projects was also a factor behind strong cement sales.

Cement sales increased 14.3 percent last year to a record 24.36 million MT from 21.3 million MT in 2014.

Cement manufacturers also increased their capacity utilization to 85 percent in 2015 from 65 percent in 2014 as demand for the product continued to rise.

The Trade Department said there was enough volume to supply the requirements of the construction sector.
