Beefed-up roster boosts Batang Pier’s bid in PBA

For the past several seasons in the Philippine Basketball Association, GlobalPort had tried to get over the hump to be considered as serious contenders but continued to fall short.

In the upcoming 41st PBA season,  the Batang Pier are looking to make a breakthrough with a beefed-up roster which would possibly keep in step with the perennial league contenders.

The past season was a huge stepping stone for the Batang Pier as it was able to get the franchise’s first twice-to-beat edge in the Governors’ Cup where it ended up as the No. 4 seed and came close to landing in the semifinals.

The team’s inexperience, however was exploited by the veteran Star Hotshots and GlobalPort fell short and bowed out in the quarterfinals just like in the first two conferences.

But with the drastic improvement being shown by stars Terrence Romeo, who will bring with him a more matured game and his Smart Gilas experience, and reigning Rookie of the Year Stanley Pringle as well as key acquisitions of veteran playmaker Joseph Yeo, seasoned bigs Jay Washington, Jervy Cruz and Dorian Pena as well as rookie Roi Sumang, sky is the limit for GlobalPort.

GlobalPort owner Mikee Romero himself said he is very upbeat that his team may finally go deeper in the playoffs this season with all the build-ups and improvement that it made.

‘We really want to finally get to the semifinals,’’ said Romero. ‘’We came close last season and we’re hoping that we can do it this season with a stronger line-up.’’
