Signal No. 1 raised in several areas as ‘Kristine’ maintains strength

Several areas across Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao were placed under wind signal no. 1 on Monday as tropical depression ‘Kristine’ maintained its strength while moving west southwestward over the Philippine Sea.

Based on its 11:00 a.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the storm is forecast to move over Catarman, Northern Samar by 8:00 p.m. tonight.

The eye of the storm was last spotted at 870 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas. It had maximum sustained winds of 55 km per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 70 km/h.

“’Kristine’ is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm in the next 12 hours. It may reach severe tropical storm category by Wednesday (23 October) and typhoon category by Thursday (24 October) evening or Friday (25 October) morning, prior to landfall over the northeastern portion of Cagayan,” PAGASA said.

The following areas remain under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal no. 1:

LUZON: Catanduanes, Masbate including Ticao and Burias Islands, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Norte and the eastern portion of Quezon (Tagkawayan, Guinayangan, Buenavista, San Narciso and San Andres)

VISAYAS: Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Samar, Leyte, Biliran and Southern Leyte

MINDANAO: Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte, including Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands
