2 PH marks shattered in shootfest

Two more Philippine records were set last Sunday in the National 10m Air Pistol and 10m 3 Pistol Competitions at the Philippine Marine range inside the Ft. Bonifacio barracks in Makati City.

Amparo Teresa Acuna did it again when she broke the national mark in the 50-meter 3-position air rifle event and after smashing it last week.

Philippine National Shooting Association secretary general Iryne Garcia confirmed this in an online post, as the four legs of the national championships drew to an end.

The 24-year-old Acuna scored 1152 points, which bettered her 1149 points last week. Prior to this, she held the previous national mark of 1146 in the 2019 Doha Asian Championships.

Acuna’s new record was so impressive, it also tied the national men’s record set by Rodolfo Aquino Jr. in the 90s.

Garcia also confirmed that Franchette Quiroz claimed a new Philippine record in the women’s 10m air pistol with a score of 567 to earn the gold.

Angela Dimaculangan settled for the silver and Elvie Baldivino bagged the bronze.

The performances of Acuna and Quiroz came as Olympian Jayson Valdez once again surpassed the Olympic minimum qualifying standard when he shot 1146.

Garcia said they will have one more set of competitions this weekend in their bid.

The final shootoff, according to Garcia, will allow them to finalize their list of qualifiers for the national team in the coming Southeast Asian Games.
