The College of Saint Benilde Blazers will still have Ty Tang as the head coach of their men’s basketball team.
School officials have not looked for a replacement for Tang even after he and his family left the country on June 18 to migrate to Canada.
For now, Tang is on leave while there has been no physical and face-to-face sports activities allowed in the last two years of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Tang said he will be back with the Blazers once green light is given for the team to go into physical training and workouts.
“It may happen. Depends when it will start,” said the 37-year-old Tang in a message to the Manila Standard.
School officials said they are keen on letting Tang stay on to handle the squad whenever the league is finally allowed to have team practices.
“Si coach Ty Tang pa rin ang coach ng Benilde. Naka-leave of absence lang siya,” said Dax Castellano, sports director of CSB and incoming management committee head for Season 97.
In Tang’s last two years with the team, the Blazers managed to finish fifth and almost made it to the Final Four — toting a 10-8 record in Season 94 and a 9-9 slate the following year, before Season 96 was called off due to the coronavirus pandemic.
For now, the Blazers still have a core of players led by Justin Gutang, Will Gozum, and Migs Oczon.
