“I am running as an independent. I filed as an independent,” said Zubiri after he filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) at the Sofitel Harbor Garden Tent Wednesday morning.

Senator Joel Villanueva followed suit, saying he filed his COC on the same day he resigned as Director General of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) six years ago. October 6 is also the birthday of his father, evangelist and CIBAC party-list Rep. Brother Eddie Villanueva.

Meanwhile, Mark Villar, who has resigned as Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary, also formalized his senatorial bid as he filed his COC.

Villar, who was accompanied by his wife Diwa party-list Rep. Emmeline Aglipay-Villar, is the first Duterte Cabinet member to step down ahead of the upcoming polls.

Sen. Risa Hontiveros has already filed her COC, while Sen. Francis Pangilinan was supposed to file his but deferred it due to the request of Liberal Party mate Vice President Leni Robredo.
