Several tools and technologies claiming to prevent or fight the virus have emerged since the COVID-19 pandemic started. Widespread use, however, does not equate to effectiveness; some claims are often unfounded, others anecdotal. Fortunately there are those confirmed by science.
On July 31, 2020, Panasonic verified the effectiveness of its proprietary nanoe X technology in suppressing the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. It tapped the Osaka Prefecture University to confirm the capabilities of this technology which showed 99 percent inhibitory effect on SARS-CoV-2 in three hours.
The study in Japan was later confirmed on Oct. 26 by Texcell, a research institute in Paris, France, reporting an inhibitory effect of 99.99 percent in a 45-liter enclosed space within two hours.
This COVID-fighting technology is present in Panasonic’s newly launched window-type Premium WAC Inverter XU Series air conditioner and in various split-type air conditioner units and portable generators launched prior.
What is nanoe X
Panasonic has been conducting continuous research on nanoe X technology since 1997. It has been found to inhibit bacteria, fungi, viruses, and allergens using hydroxyl radicals – naturally occurring highly reactive components found in the lowest layer of the atmosphere (troposphere) that “purify the air”, according to Dr. Rontgene Solante, chief of adult infectious diseases and tropical medicine at San Lazaro Hospital.
The nanoe X air conditioner collects moisture in the air and applies high voltage to it to produce hydroxyl radicals contained in water, which have a longer lifespan than those in the air.
According to Panasonic, the nanoe X air conditioners are capable of providing 24-hour protection against viruses, allergens, pollutants, and mold. They can inhibit both airborne and adhered substances. The window-type is suitable for home use.
“Having this nanoe X technology is an advantage over ordinary air conditioning units,” asserted Dr. Solante.
Dr. Camilo C. Roa, Jr., the global governor of the American College of Chest Physicians, seconded, saying, “The nanoe X will add to the layer of protection. We should not rely on just one or two layers of protection, we need to do everything so the person and the family are protected.”
Both medical experts agree on supplementing vaccines and minimum public health standards with science-backed technologies that are good for the people and environment. The nanoe X air conditioners produce ozone “within the level acceptable by the standard”, according to Engr. Francis Serrato of Panasonic Air Conditioning Philippines.
“Vaccination can protect us from transmitting the infection. If we are vaccinated, we’re also protected from hospitalization and death. But aside from vaccination, infection prevention is also needed, which is the use of masks, shields, and, if you’re in closed space, adequate ventilation,” said Dr. Solante
