A Filipino athlete and her coach are now in quarantine after testing positive during the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics 2021.
Visually impaired discus thrower Jeannette Aceveda and her coach Bernard Buen have been relocated to an outdoor isolation facility in Tokyo.
Philippine Paralympics Committee Michael Barredo confirmed this following the reports that two more athletes have tested positive for coronavirus inside the Paralympic Village.
Organizers said these are the first cases to be identified at the residential complex since August 26, after none were reported before inside the Village.
“Both are now in isolation after being brought to an outdoor quarantine facility. Jeannette is disappointed that she will have to withdraw from her event that is scheduled on Aug. 31,” said Barredo.
The two reported cases put the overall number inside the Athletes Village to 15.
So far, there are now a total of seven athletes who have tested positive as of Sunday.
Barredo said the status of Acevedo and Buen were discovered after they underwent a mandatory and daily saliva antigen test.
The other cases involved one Games-concerned personnel, one member of the media, and seven contractors.
Organizers said that the overall number of cases linked to the Paralympics now stands at 230 since August 1.
The tests done on athletes were required under the Tokyo Olympics/Paralympics playbook.
Earlier, para-powerlifter Achele "Jinky’’ Guion tested positive for COVID-19 together with her coach Antonio “Tony’’ Taguibao.
Both were not allowed to leave for Tokyo because of this.
