Darryl Yap reveals real inspiration of Carmela in ‘Revirginized’

Darryl Yap has a new comedy movie that everyone is talking about not only because it is top-billed by Megastar Sharon Cuneta but for the sole reason that it presents a character mainstream cinema doesn’t usually tackle.

In the movie, Sharon plays the you-have-never-seen-before character named Carmela. Distraught from her recently-decided annulment, she loiters at a sari-sari store, dazed and confused. She accidentally meets her goddaughter and her friends who are buying tons of alcohol at the store before they head out to a beach party. Wanting to escape from her reality, Carmela blackmails her goddaughter that she would snitch her to her mom if she doesn’t bring her to the beach party.

Trying hard to be young and wild and with all the awkwardness, Carmela will try to party hard and even have a one night stand with Morph (Marco Gumabao), the hunk young man who owns the venue of the beach party, and also a tattoo artist. Morph will, later on, confess to Carmela that he has fallen for her the moment he saw her peeing and talking to baby turtles by the seaside.

In the midst of the noise and chaos of the beach party, Carmela will understand the youth of today’s generation and she will finally realize her self-worth and will start to dream again for herself.

“Carmela is a decent person. Her character has a deeper meaning compared to what the audience thought based on what they saw in the trailer. I hope that they watch the movie and really understand the message that we wanted to convey,” the Megastar told Manila Standard Entertainment.

Meanwhile, the young and prolific director of the film revealed the real inspiration behind the intriguing character that tags Sharon as an ultimate MILF.

“The inspiration of Carmela is really Sharon Cuneta. I have the ambition to work with her. I wanted to give the public the most shocking Sharon Cuneta. That was the goal,” Darryl stated.

“My intention here is to tell the world that my mom is a Sharonian and to make the millennials and the Gen Z realize who Sharon Cuneta is and why she’s the megastar, and why she’s still relevant. I wanted to tell a story not of Carmela but of Sharon who is actually an actress for all ages,” the director added.

Darryl was so proud of the film he called it the project that will define his career as a director.

“I want to create a film that will be remembered throughout the rest of my career. I apologized to the other artists I have worked with but Revirginized is my most important film at the moment,” he asserted.

According to Viva, Revirginized is the No. 1 pre-sold film on ktx.ph. It’s also the first Philippine film this year to have a theatrical release in the US and Canada starting Aug. 13. It will also be shown on Cignal PPV on Aug. 27.
