White guy with guitar while drumming

For a Beatles fanatic like me, I obviously get excited hearing singers cover classic hits from no doubt the greatest group ever.  It’ gets more interesting when somebody showcases his own rendition of, say, “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window”—a short track tucked in the climactic “Big One” medley heard in the band’s final album recording Abbey Road. It is a deep cut by any measure.

That is how I got introduced to the artistry of Danny Lynch, an American singer-songwriter who sings, and then plays guitar and drums simultaneously. Yes, you heard that right. He makes use of his feet — the right for the kick, the left for the snare.

“Doing it altogether feels like a good workout. It gives me a certain sense of rhythm and timing,” he argued, as evident in the YouTube clip where he is seen delightfully performing the said Paul McCartney-penned-and-sung Beatles track with his efficient guitarist-buddy Kevin Joela.

The two of them form the David Lynch Project which gives classic hits of their choice some bright, lively approach worth hearing over and over. Samples include their versions of The Doors’s “Love Me Two Times”, Wayne Cochran’s “Last Kiss," and Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.”

While the duo also tackles more familiar numbers from the Fab Four like “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and “Across The Universe,” I had to ask Danny during a chat why he chose a relatively obscure track to demonstrate his steady beat that separates him from guys with guitars out there. He noted, “I love the true story behind it.”

A Beatle fan named Diane Ashley claimed she found a ladder in Beatle Paul’s garden back in the ‘60s and “stuck it up the bathroom window which he'd left slightly open.”

Mind you, too, there’s more to the Danny Lynch Project apart from doing great covers and singing equally impressive originals like the riff-anchored “Broken Guitar” and the power ballad “Gravity. The group interestingly recorded a Filipino composition called “Crossroads” written by London-based songwriter Erasmo “Rusty” Malllillin. The song had been uploaded on YouTube by way of the group’s channel.

London-based Filipino songwriter Rusty Mallillin wrote a song called “Crossroads,” performed by the Danny Lynch Project duo in a YouTube video and soon to be released in digital music stores.

“When I heard the song, I immediately liked its vibe and message so all we had to do was bring in our personality into it,” implied the hard-working gifted talent who founded a production company, D-Lynch Productions LLC, that offers recording, videography, and graphic design services.

The fact that Danny has himself written songs for various artists including Atlantic Records’ Halestorm, multi-platinum producer Josh Thompson, the Grammy-nominated David Ivory, and singer-songwriter Mutlu, only magnified the legitimacy of the Filipino creation.

Crucial to Danny Lynch’s versatility is the way he carefully addressed his early struggles in life. It truly drove him to keep doing what he loves even in the midst of a pandemic. He related, “I came from the (housing) projects. I know how it is to struggle and I see music as therapy.”
