Heart doctors ring alarm over hypertension

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, heart doctors have raised concern over the failure of the people to go through a regular medical check-up.

At a virtual conference organized by the Philippine Heart Association, Dr. Jorge Sison, former PHA president, called on the people, particularly the adults, to have themselves checked regularly.

“Once your age is no longer at the calendar, it is best that you undergo a checkup because high blood happens even to the younger ones.

There are even hypertensive children,” he said.

Dr. Benjamin Jose Quito cautioned men who suffer from abdominal fat to have themselves checked at once, saying having too much fat could

increase their chances of contracting a cardiovascular disease and even severe COVID-19.

“The virus gets more into the fat,” he warned.

According to the PHA, “sadly,” 82 percent of the people do not have themselves checked by a doctor.

Out of the 18 percent who seek medical advice, only a few do an exercise.

The Father’s Day Special forum dubbed “Puso ni Daddy: Sinlakas pa ba ng Haligi?” was organized in cooperation with Corbridge Group

Philippines with actor guests Robin Padilla and Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez.

“Men must be creative to exercise even at home amid the pandemic.

You do not have to stop. What is important is consistency,” Quito said.

Dr. Rodette Arevalo, Gomez’s cardiologist, said “men and women, we all have to live a healthy life. If we do not see our doctor, how can we know if we have hypertension or diabetes? It is important that we communicate with our doctors.”

Dr. Orlando Bugarin, outgoing PHA president, thanked Corbridge and the entire PHA and its doctors for their initiatives to educate the public about the importance of having a healthy heart.
