The Department of Energy’s (DOE) plans to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, received a shot in the arm recently with the start of operations of the 50-megawatts (MW) solar power plant of PowerSource First Bulacan Solar, Inc. (PFBSI).
Called BulacanSol, the plant now provides renewable power to the Luzon grid. The DOE commits to a GHG reduction and avoidance target of a 2.8% from 2020-2030, and 12.3% from 2020-2050.
Located in San Miguel, Bulacan, the P4.25-billion project is a joint endeavor of MGen Renewable Energy, Inc. (MGreen) and PowerSource Energy Holdings Corporation. MGreen is the renewable energy unit of Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGen).
“We look forward to many more investments in renewables, particularly solar, as we attempt to achieve that balance in fuel sourcing, which will ultimately be biased towards renewables,” said Meralco chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan.
Added PFBSI chairman Rogelio L. Singson: “BulacanSol will help us achieve our target of building a renewable energy portfolio with a capacity of up to 1,500MW in the next five to seven years.”
