Slow-moving typhoon dumps more rains

A 79-year-old man died after getting hit by a fallen coconut tree during the onslaught of Typhoon Bising, which left more than 100,000 people evacuated in the Bicol and Eastern Visayas regions.

Bising, the second storm to enter the country that was originally classified as a super typhoon, did not make landfall but triggered massive flooding in lower-lying communities.

State weather bureau Pagasa said Bising maintained its strength while moving slowly north-northwestward east of Camarines Norte.

The typhoon was packing maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 240 km/h.

Tropical cyclone signal no. 2 remained hoisted over Catanduanes, the eastern portion of Camarines Sur, the eastern portion of Albay, the eastern and central portions of Sorsogon, Northern Samar, the northern portion of Samar, and the northern portion of Eastern Samar.

Signal no. 1 was in effect over the eastern portion of Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, the northern and central portions of Aurora, the eastern portion of Quezon, including Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte, the rest of Camarines Sur, the rest of Albay, the rest of Sorsogon, Masbate, including Burias and Ticao Islands, the rest of Samar, the rest of Eastern Samar, Biliran, Leyte and the northern portion of Cebu.

According to the Eastern Visayas Office of Civil Defense, the fatality, Alberto Wales, suffered severe head injury and was declared dead on arrival at the Anahawan District Hospital in Southern Leyte.

In San Jose, Northern Samar, a 40-year-old man identified as Louie Din, was reported missing after he ventured into the sea to get his livestock on a nearby island. He was identified by authorities as Louie Din.
