Budding scholar Gregorio “Gio” R. Caliguia III, who specializes on the history of gender and sexuality, is conducting a free and public online lecture about creating a safer Philippines for the LGBTQIA+ community on March 5.
Entitled “SENSE on LGBTQIA,” Caliguia will explain the implications of not having a gender-sensitive language. He will also share the vital tools, connections, and current challenges for better communication for all genders, to include the LGBTQIA+.
SOGIE (sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression) will likewise be discussed in depth.
Caliguia, who is a senior research specialist of auction house Casa de Memoria, will talk about archival rediscoveries on Philippine gay history, extended to the broader challenges of the LGBTQIA+ community.
A history graduate from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Manila, he is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree in Philippine Studies at the Asian Center of the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he specializes in Philippine gay historiography.
His thesis argues that our understanding of identities that are historically defined and socially disabled can be reframed by the study of the history of the word “bakla.”
The webinar is hosted by De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde’s Center for Inclusive Education.
“SENSE on LGBTQIA+” will be conducted via Zoom, at 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Filipino Sign Language interpreters will be available during the talk. Interested participants may register through senseonlgbtqia.eventbrite.com.
