Palawan’s Samantha Bernardo guns for PH’s first Miss Grand International crown

After finishing 2nd runner-up for two consecutive years at the Binibining Pilipinas 2018 and 2019 search, Samantha Bernardo has been finally selected as the Philippines’ representative in the 8th Miss Grand International pageant happening in Bangkok, Thailand on March 27.

The 27-year-old Bernardo is a native of Palawan and holds a degree in Hospitality Management. Formerly the president of Sining Palawan Dance Troupe, Bernardo worked as a model and is an entrepreneur managing her own clothing company.

A cultural performer, Bernardo was also into the sports of rhythmic gymnastics and competed in national competitions representing her home province. She presently volunteers as a spokesperson with the Philippine Movement Against Malaria, a movement that aims for a malaria-free Philippines by 2030.

Pageant veteran Samantha Bernardo is representing the Philippines at the Miss Grand International pageant happening in Thailand in March.

At the Miss Grand International pageant, Bernardo aims to compete in a platform to campaign on the strengthening of health systems and helping poor countries cope with the crippling effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.  

The dusky Bernardo, who stands 5-foot-8, has started preparation for the pageant with the valuable help and guidance of her mentor, beauty queen-maker Rodgil Flores. While seasoned national costume designer Patrick Isorena will design her national costume.

Since the Thailand-based pageant started in 2013, the Philippines has finished strongly with Annalie Forbes (3rd runner-up in 2013), Parul Shah (3rd runner-up in 2015), Nicole Cordoves (1st runner-up in 2016), and Elizabeth Durado Clenci (2nd runner-up in 2017).

Will Bernardo become the first Filipina to win the Miss Grand International crown currently held by Valentina Figuera of Venezuela? Let’s all wait and see.
