In Chinese culture, wearing new clothes from head to toe during Lunar New Year symbolizes fresh start and renewed hope. And if we’re welcoming a new year in new clothes, there’s nothing wrong doing it in style, right? Fashion houses celebrate the Year of the Ox with Chinese New Year collections.
Doraemon wears Gucci
Or maybe it’s the way around. In celebration of Doraemon’s 50th anniversary and Gucci’s 100th, Alessandro Michele has dedicated the Italian house’s CNY collection to the cat-type robot from the 22nd century.
For the occasion, Doraemon, in his classic blue color over the GG motif, takes the stage of Gucci’s Lunar New Year campaign shot by Angelo Pennetta. The robot cat from the future is adorably and prominently featured in ready-to-wear pieces such as jackets, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and skirts; and shoes and bags.
Clarabelle and Friends meet Kate Spade
Kate Spade New York has partnered with Disney to bring the iconic Clarabelle & Friends characters to life in an assortment of ready-to-wear, handbags, small leather goods, and accessories for its Year of the Ox CNY collection.
Inspired by Clarabelle Cow and her playful group of famous friends, the six-piece collection features classic Kate Spade New York silhouettes, all re-imagined highlighting each unique character, including Clarabelle, Minnie Mouse, and Daisy Duck.
CNY Chloé
French fashion house Chloé injects its signature feminine aesthetic in its Chinese New Year collection composed of printed tops, accessories, and bags such as Daria Mini in denim canvas and calfskin with Year of the Ox metal pins, Mini Round Daria in grained and shiny calfskin, and Drew cross-body backpack in shiny red calfskin.
Valentino’s studs and reds
Valentino Garavani highlights its signature Roman stud in its Chinese New Year collection entitled “Pieces of Joy, A Roman Stud Special Selection.” The house’s metallic pyramidal hardware makes an appearance in shoes, bags, and accessories that come in reds and pinks and gold.
Michael Kors’ tweed twist
Michael Kors gives its most-loved bags, including the SoHo shoulder bag a tweed twist for the Lunar New Year. The special edition collection features SoHo bag in red tweed and black tweed.
Balenciaga and the Ox
An adorable illustration of ox appears on Balenciaga’s ready-to-wear apparel, while accessories feature an all-over logo print with the Chinese character for “ox” in black and white.
CK takes care of underwear
Wearing red underwear is another Chinese New Year tradition. Calvin Klein’s CNY Holiday collection features the red low-rise trunk featuring elastic logo waistband, 360 stretch design, and a special ox print.
