President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday said he would not allow his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, to run for president in the coming national elections, because he would not want her to experience what he was going through as the leader of the country.
Duterte also rejected rumors that he was planning to extend his term as president, stressing he was tired of politics.
The President made the remarks during the opening of the Metro Manila Skyway stage 3 project in Quezon City, saying there were people convincing his daughter, Sara, to run for the country’s top post.
“My daughter, they are egging her to run, but I told her not to run. I pity her and (I) don’t want (her) to experience what I am going through,” Duterte said.
He said the job was not for women, adding “you know, the emotional setup of a woman and a man is totally different. You’ll become a fool here.”
The President also downplayed persistent rumors he was seeking to extend his six-year term which ends in May next year after some members of Congress he did not identify renewed their push for amendments in the Constitution last week.
“Term extension? My God,” Duterte said.
“Even if you give it to me on a silver platter. Even if you give me another 10 years for free, I’ll tell you: You son of a bitch, you take it. I’m done.”
The Chief executive has been consistent in his stand that he will not go beyond his six-year term. His last day as chief executive is on June 30, 2022.
Only recently, presidential spokesman Harry Roque said Duterte was not supporting moves to amend the 1987 Constitution so he can extend his term of office.
“Those rumors have no basis. They are only rumors. The President has made it clear. He has no wish to stay even a minute longer beyond his term of office which ends on June 30, 2022,” Roque added.
