Comedian and content creator Michael V., Bubble Gang mainstays Paolo Contis and Chariz Solomon, and veteran actor and Pepito Manaloto star Ronnie Henares tackled what makes an effective comedian, the current landscape of comedy in the Philippines, the stereotypes and misconceptions of the comedy genre on GMA Artist Center’s online show How Do You Feel?: Usapang Artista last Saturday, June 27.
It was a discussion filled with laughs and insights facilitated by Mikoy Morales.
Michael V. highlighted the importance of having a unique style and voice in different levels of entertainment, particularly in comedy. “You really have to stand your ground. Create your own personality at saka gagawa ka ng sarili mong puwesto sa industriya,” he said.
Meanwhile, Paolo shared how he adds his own flavor to his craft as a comedian. “The more truth I see, the funnier it gets. Dati hirap na hirap akong makaisip ng konsepto ng script na pwede kong isulat dahil ang dami, pero kapag mag-concentrate ka lang sa isang pangyayaring based on reality, feeling ko strength ko ‘yun. Lalagyan ko lang ng twist of logic.”
Chariz attributes her knowledge on comedy and techniques to her mentors. She related, “When I’m being true to the situation, true to myself and my emotions, ‘yun yung nakakatawa.”
Ronnie explained that good comedy is all about the timing, “A lot of it is timing. It depends on the timing that happens in the show and your expressions.”
