PSC will help Marcial take next step to Tokyo

After training all by himself at home for the last three months, Eumir Felix Marcial will soon be able to leave his residence in Imus, Cavite.

The Philippine Sports Commission will soon form a team of experts to help him prepare for the Tokyo Olympics.

And it will also make the boxing gym at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex available to him for workouts.

Commissioner Ramon Fernandez said he will make this possible when the board meets in the coming days to discuss their plans for Olympic-bound athletes.

Fernandez also made assurances of the agency’s support to Marcial after both talked by phone last Thursday.

“Ang importante at maibalik ang physical shape niya sa 100 percent,” said Fernandez in an interview.

The team of experts that Marcial will have is similar to the group of individuals which formed the core groups of experts that behind the ongoing preparations of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena, gymnast Carlos Yulo and those who are backing up fellow boxer Irish Magno.

Since the lockdown started last March 15, the 24-year-old Marcial has been getting in shape through shadow boxing and exercises inside his home, and with whatever available materials he has.

Because he has no equipment available, he cannot get far with his preparations.

“Pwede na siya makapag-sparring sa PSC gym. And we’ll see later kung pwede na siyang may ka-sparring,” said Fernandez.

Marcial has been getting ready for the Tokyo Olympics since he earned a qualifying slot last March in the 2020 Asia/Oceania boxing qualifying tournament in Amman, Jordan.

“Tuluy-tuloy lang kahit walang equipment,” said Marcial.

He is seeking one professional fight before going to the Olympiad.

Marcial believes that stepping on the ring as a pro, before the Olympiad, will be a great experience for him.
