Selling of liquors remains prohibited in Parañaque City until May 15, Mayor Edwin Olivarez announced Friday.
Olivarez said the restriction during the extended period of the Enhanced Community Quarantine aims to discourage residents from gathering at bars and streets and stop the spread of coronavirus.
On Tuesday, alcoholic beverage makers asked the national government to lift the total liquor ban imposed in several cities in Metro Manila and provinces during the lockdown period.
According to the Center for Alcohol Research and Development, “if this ban continues, the industry can no longer survive, a situation that can affect a large sector of the community.”
But Olivarez said there is no plan to lift the liquor ban until May 15 this year to strictly implement the social distancing.
The city chief executive also expressed his disappointment over reports that some city residents were not following the government’s rules prohibiting mass gatherings due to the ECQ.
