Police probers are investigating the death of retired cager Manuel “Maui” Huelar.
Huelar, a former player of the Metropolitan Basketball Association, was shot dead by an unidentified gunman in Bacolod City Thursday afternoon.
According to the police, Huelar was outside a gym along Barangay Villamonte when a lone gunman fired at him.
Police, who went to investigate, found the bloodied Huelar, who was seen wearing a basketball jersey.
Huelar was a former barangay captain of Barangay 35 in Bacolod City.
The former player, known for his stint with the Negros Slashers of the MBA back in 1998, was previously arrested during a buy-bust operation in Bacolod City in 2016.
Huelar teamed up with league MVP John Ferriols, Johnedel Cardel, Reynel Hugnatan and Jack Tanuan as the Slashers reached the finals in the league’s inaugural season in 1998.
Hugnatan earlier paid tribute to Huelar with an image of the Slashers on his Facebook page.
Huelar also once signed up for FedEx in the Philippine Basketball Association as a reserve. He also played for Hapee Toothpaste in the Philippine Basketball League.
