International Master (IM) Daniel Maravilla Quizon bagged another title this year after ruling the fourth leg of the 1st Philippine National Bullet Chess Championships online tournament on Saturday, April 11, 2020.
The 15-year-old Quizon, the top player of Dasmariñas Chess Academy under the leadership of Rep. Elpidio “Pidi” Barzaga and national coach International Master (IM) Roel Abelgas, tallied 83 Arena points.
Quizon also won the Rising Phoenix International Chess Championship 2020 hosted by Rising Phoenix Chess Academy Owner/Managing Director International Master (IM) Joel “Cholo” Banawa and the 1st All Dasmarinas Online Blitz (five minutes) Chess Tournament.
Reigning National Open champion United States based Grandmaster (GM) Rogelio “Banjo” Barcenilla Jr., winner of the inaugural leg of the online series, wound up 2nd place with Arena 82 points while International Master (IM) Joel Pimentel who hails from Bacolod City settled for 3rd place with 81 points.
The online chess tournament was held to continue the National Chess Federation of the Philippines’ program for athletes in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is backed by NCFP chairman/president Rep. Prospero “Butch” Arreza Pichay Jr. and organized by NCFP executive director Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe who also participated.
“Congratulations to the winners of our 4th leg. We made another record number of participants at 523! The field is so strong. Hirap makapuntos talaga, grabe. I guess I should be happy with my 52nd place. But I know I can do better,” said Orbe.
Rounding up to the top 10 were 4th Chester Neil Reyes, 5th Grandmaster (GM) Darwin Laylo, 6th Sherwin Tiu, 7th Fide Master (FM) Arden Reyes, 8th Karl Victor Ochoa, 9th National Master (NM) Jayson Bullanday Salubre and 10th Ellan Asuella.
