Narvacan, Ilocos Sur Mayor Luis “Chavit” Singson on Monday guaranteed subscribers would have better benefits from the Philippines’ third telecommunications company Dito, formerly Mislatel.
Mislatel is now putting up cell sites nationwide, which will be open for use by the other telecom firms once they become operational.
To bolster his assertion of a better third telecoms firm, Singson also said the cell sites would expand network coverage.
As League of Municipalities president, he vowed to provide free Wi-Fi connectivity in all municipalities in the country.
The LCS Group of Companies, owned by Singson, is a major investor in Dito.
The 78-year-old Singson, who started his political career as Vigan City councilor in 1963, heads the LCS conglomerate with business interests in automobile dealership and telecommunications.
At the same time, Singson aired his support for federalism, which he believes would immensely benefit more than 1,400 towns and municipalities throughout the country.
“This can be realized through the faster allocation of budgeting requirements for their respective developmental projects,” Singson said.
He regretted that the system places local government units at a disadvantage when requiring program funding that usually comes from the national government.
He cited as his best achievement in his long years in public service the passage of R.A. 7171, which allocates a bigger percentage of excise taxes to the towns from where the taxes were collected.
Next month, Singson will lead the LMP general assembly where it will formulate plans for this year.
Chavit is a key figure in the Singson-Crisologo clans”•his father is a Singson and his mother is a Crisologo”•that has dominated the Ilocos region for more than six decades.
